Brass instruments were first used for communication over long distances, then to announce battles, hunts, and ceremonies. The music for brass spans the centuries, from arrangements of Renaissance dances to current works composed for the modern brass quintet.

The performers for this special evening are: George Coble who has performed as Principal Trumpet with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra since 1972, Ryan Barwise, trumpet, a graduate of Northwestern University and the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, Jon Garland, Assistant First/Utility Horn who joined the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra in 1997, William Harris, Principal Trombone, one of the founding musicians of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra and a former member of the United States Army Band at West Point. Edwin Diefes, Principal Tuba, who joined the Syracuse Symphony in 1995.
